Kirk Godless

A solo piece fusing storytelling, performance BBC radiophonic workshop style sound, video and animation. A twisted magical realist approach to its characters’ neurosis and psychosis. Film and animation are used to show the characters’ preoccupations - political and sexual. As ever, the old ghost of the great showman P.T Barnum stands watch over the proceedings, ensuring that our macabre insights into the nature of early 21st century man, are delivered with panache and brio: the artist still at all times at pains (and in pain) to make sure the audience are never bored. 

The show takes the form of a multi-media piece of storytelling. The projected cartoon slides which open the show are hand operated by performer who will, later, use his own bare body as a projection screen for the Claymation movie which reveals the true depth of ‘Kirk’s depravity.
 
In essence, this show paints a picture of contemporary England through the microcosmic prism of the (fictional) Bernard Hepton estate, now sinking beneath the lava of council-housing sell off...it is the not too distant future, and already rents are rising as wages plummet, and the two central characters reflect the contradictions in our society through their bizarre love affair: Kirk, recently redundant and struggling with a parent slipping into drug induced psychosis, finds solace in the sinister arms of internet ‘erotica’, while bereaved bisexual BPD* sufferer DORIS uses her obsession with third world debt, as a from of self harm...

The piece is as lurid and as eye-hurting as ever (in a good way) with the animated films presented in enhanced extended versions, and the soundscapes of Tim Cooke and CREVICE, his trusted team of mentally ill musicians hinting at fresh outrages in their mixture of swirling electronic noise and sound bites, reflecting the feelings of this growing yet under represented segment of society.
