Conversing with Angels

Dates:
04/05/2003

A child stands alone, rocking back and forth, reading “holy” scriptures, in an image that strikes fear into the heart of the West.

Encircled by the Call to Prayer, this is a litany of letters from great grandfather to grandfather evoking the internal struggle and outward tension of the need to “come home”. A father’s pleas for his son to return intermingle with those of a child asking how he will be held accountable at the time of his death. Conversing with Angels looks at the questions that will be asked, by his angels during the first 7 days of death...

A ritual that arrives at the point it began. Prayers breathed within three states of being – physical, mental and spiritual. Three marks left behind denote father, self and foetus. At its core this dance explores the holy war between internal and external self, seeking refuge in the love of the creator, in the arms of the father, in the conviction of the lover, and the innocence of the one unborn.

Conversing with Angels leads off from a dance/movement base, drawing on the vocabulary of Kathak to illustrate an inner and outer turmoil.
