Sophia Di Martino
Sophia di Martino graduated in 2005 from the University of Salford’s Media and Performance course. As well as being an emergent performer, film-maker and actor, Sophia has now started to develop her own practice in live art and contemporary performance, which has to date earned her a place at the 2007 National Review of Live Art. She is also a successful actress appearing regularly on TV, most recently in The Royal Today and Casualty.
The main elements of my work are story-telling, myth and automythography. My work is largely based around research, real life and real Vs myth. I began working with performative gender whilst still at university and this has developed into a fascination with ‘performative performance’. I enjoy experimenting with spontaneous performance and reactions from audience. The relationship between performer and audience is often blurred in my work because the audience is usually of prime importance in its shape. I like to give myself the task of telling an unknown story and one to one work is of particular interest to me at the moment.
