Michael Hulls is a freelance lighting designer living in London. He trained in dance and theatre and in 1992 was awarded a bursary by the Arts Council to study lighting design with Jennifer Tipton in New York and Paris. Since then, he has worked mainly within contemporary dance and has developed a close working relationship with the choreographer Russell Maliphant. Their collaborations, including „Shift“, „Two“, „Unspoken“ and „Critical Mass“, have won international critical acclaim for developing a language born out of the interaction between light and movement. Michael has also worked closely with Jonathan Burrows, with Meg Stuart, Steve Paxton, Akram Khan, Laurie Booth, Rambert Dance Company, Ricochet Dance Company and Het National Ballet in Amsterdam. Michael has lit concerts and installations for the composers Kevin Volans and Gavin Bryars and has also worked in theatre with Oxford Stage Company. His work has been seen in over 30 countries throughout Europe, in North and South America, and in Australia.
